At Royal Britannia Kindergarten, our curriculum is built upon the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which sets the national standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to five years old. At RB, this framework is carefully adapted to meet the needs of children with special educational needs (SEN), ensuring that every child can access learning in a way that suits their individual abilities and pace.
Our EYFS approach is further enhanced through alignment with NASEN principles, promoting inclusion, differentiation, and holistic development across all areas of learning. We focus on developing the whole child, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically, within a nurturing, structured, and supportive environment.
The EYFS framework recognises two main areas of development: Prime and Specific, encompassing seven key areas and seventeen learning goals that guide each child’s progress. At RB, learning goals are achieved at varying levels depending on each child’s strengths and needs, allowing for flexibility and personalised support.
We also integrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) into our daily learning, encouraging creativity, exploration, and problem-solving. This holistic approach helps children make meaningful connections between disciplines while building curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
The EYFS framework is divided into seven interconnected areas of learning and development:
This holistic and SEN-adapted EYFS curriculum ensures that every child develops essential life skills, emotional resilience, and a lifelong love of learning, empowering them to reach their full potential in a nurturing and inclusive environment.
At Royal Britannia, every child’s learning journey is unique. Our approach to assessment and progress monitoring is holistic, collaborative, and designed to ensure that each learner’s strengths, challenges, and developmental needs are fully understood and supported.
We use a combination of continuous classroom observation, developmental checklists, and formal assessments carried out by both teachers and our team of specialist therapists, including Speech and Language, Occupational, Physio and Behavioural Therapists. This multidisciplinary approach provides a complete picture of each child’s progress, helping us plan meaningful next steps and ensure the best possible outcomes.
Each child has an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) developed collaboratively by teachers, therapists, and parents. The IEP outlines specific learning goals, therapeutic objectives, and tailored strategies that target each child’s individual needs. These plans are reviewed regularly to celebrate progress and adjust targets as children achieve new milestones.
Assessment at RBK goes beyond academic measurement, it values functional, emotional, and social development equally. Progress is documented through student portfolios, developmental reports, and regular parent meetings, ensuring families remain informed and engaged in their child’s growth.
Through close collaboration between educators, therapists, and families, we deliver a well-rounded and responsive educational experience that empowers every child to reach their full potential with confidence, independence, and joy.
